IT Literate ???

Hi everyone!

As you are all aware if you have been reading my posts, I went into my Information Technologies class thinking that it was going to be a piece of cake. After all, if I can host coding programs and understand it enough to teach teens it should be a piece of cake--I was severely mistaken. Instead of going through the class with ease, I have had quite a few hiccups--and frustrations--along the way. Did you know that coding is not as simple as codecademy and w3schools makes it out to be? Well I didn't, but I do now. Did you know that you could spend five hours coding and have nothing to show for it? Guilty as charged. In fact, over the past week, I have dedicated around ten hours to one lowly aspect of my website--making my social media buttons go in an evenly spaced horizontal line along the bottom of my web page. You might wonder why this was so difficult... well, it was all because of one little error. One little error that had me check out EVERY SINGLE coding book in my library.

Let me set the stage for you:

EXT: UNION COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY -- EVENING

It was a dark, frigid night. Arms loaded down with coding books, Danielle races to her car to escape the chill.

CUT TO:

INT: DANIELLE'S HOME -- EVENING -- THIRTY MINUTES LATER

Coding books litter what was once an empty kitchen table. Danielle rapidly flips through pages, types code into her computer, runs her code, grunts, and repeats the process with a scowl on her face.

CUT TO:

INT: DANIELLE'S HOME -- EVENING -- FOUR HOURS LATER

Danielle leans closely into her monitor as she reads her code. She glances down at a page before she types a line of code. She runs the web page. There is a small glimmer of hope in her eyes as she scans through her page. It's a success.

Danielle records her page on Snapchat as she celebrates her success.

DANIELLE
Yes! Ugh. Was it seriously that easy???
Like how did I not realize that all I had
to do was add a freaking class to the
images within my list.

FADE OUT.

Okay, so if my film background wasn't obvious before, it certainly is now. What have I learned since starting my IT class? I have learned that sometimes even the simplest things may appear hard; but with the right amount of patience and perseverance, everything will eventually work itself out. I have learned that coding isn't as easy as I originally thought. It takes extreme patience to write code, and you have to pay close attention to every detail as even the smallest of errors can render your code useless. I am learning a lot as I work towards building my web page, and I can't wait to share the completed site with all of you!
